TDAN - Hay - Modeling Business Rules: DATA DRIVEN BUSINESS RULES

TDAN - Hay - Modeling Business Rules: "MODELING BUSINESS RULES:
DATA DRIVEN BUSINESS RULES
Written by David C. Hay - Essential Strategies, Inc.
Published in TDAN.com October 2004

Articles in previous issues of TDAN[1] have discussed the extent to which business rules can be directly represented by data models. To summarize our story so far, data models do use terms to represent concepts and facts. They can represent derived data (although not the derivation logic), and they can represent a few constraints. There are a large number of constraints that they cannot represent, however. This article presents an approach to representing a category of constraints that cannot be directly represented, but which can be managed in terms of data.

How Useful are Business Rule Statements?

Column published in DMReview.com

By Malcolm Chisholm

Most people would agree that having a complete and understandable statement for every business rule is a worthy goal. Indeed, a lot of effort has been devoted to techniques for constructing rules statements that meet this goal. Yet, I have to wonder if rule statements that really work are always attainable and if spending a great deal of time on them is justified."

TDAN Loshin - A New Way of Thinking Issue 30.0: Thinking About Business Rules

TDAN Loshin - A New Way of Thinking Issue 30.0: "A New Way of Thinking - October 2004
David Loshin - Knowledge Integrity, Inc.

Thinking About Business Rules
People frequently talk about business rules as if the concept was well defined and there was a widespread agreement to that definition. However, while the concept seems to have widespread acceptance, there is less agreement about some of the more mundane (and simultaneously, pragmatic) issues surrounding the form, function, and definition of a business rule. It is very interesting, though, to see that despite the ambiguity associated with business rule concepts, there does seem to be an overwhelming agreement as to the importance of identifying, managing, and using business rules as a significant part of information management. At the risk of going out on a limb, I thought it might be interesting to take a step backward and think about business rules and their context in the data management universe.

1. Business Rules, Can They Be Re-used?, by Rik Gerrits ...............................................................
What a silly question, you might say. Of course! Business people do it all the time. And obviously you are right. A business rule can be used in more ways than the original inventor of the rule could ever have imagined. So why ask this question? In this month's column, Rik Gerrits provides his answer.

2. Premise & Conclusion: Relearning the Basics of Communicating
~ Business Semantics and Business Rules, by Ronald G. Ross ...............................................................
People in different parts of the organization do talk to each other
(usually) -- but do they really understand each other in ways that count the most? The next great advance in IT capability will be as much about rethinking business communication as it is about technology.
In this month's column, Ron Ross takes a look at how business semantics
and business rules address this fundamental challenge.

3. Modeling Concepts: Verbalizing Business Rules (part 8),
by Terry Halpin
...............................................................
Business rules should be validated by business domain experts, and hence specified using concepts and languages easily understood by business people.
This is the eighth in a series of articles on expressing business rules formally in a high-level, textual language. In this month's column, Terry Halpin discusses the verbalization of equality constraints.

6. Premise & Conclusion: Clarifying Clarifications ~ Universal
'And' to the Rescue, by Ronald G. Ross ..................................................................
As a business rule analyst, sometimes you want to provide a clarification for the business indicating that something is O.K., rather than not O.K or otherwise constrained. To do so, do you need to list every rule relevant to the circumstances that still must be followed? Fortunately not. In this issue's column, Ron Ross discusses Permission Statements, and explains why they are relatively easy to express.

7. Plainly Speaking: Organizing a Pile of Rules, by Gladys S. W. Lam ..................................................................

8. OMG Reporter: New Business Rules Initiatives from the OMG,
by Stan Hendryx
..................................................................
In this month's column, Stan Hendryx reports on the major advancements made in the ongoing work of the Object Management Group (OMG) to expand its efforts on business rules. From its August meeting in Montreal, Stan reports on several significant advances: Fujitsu presented their revised submission proposal for Business Semantics of Business Rules (BSBR), the Business Rules Team also presented their revised submission, and the BEIDTF announced the creation of a BSBR Evaluation Team (in anticipation of upcoming work to finalize BSBR).
In this month's report, Stan also reports on several other major initiatives, including the Business Rule Management RFI, the proposed Request for Comment of the BRG's 'Business Rules Motivation Metamodel' (BRMM), the Organization Structure Metamodel RFP (now available), and news from those
working on the Business Process Definition Metamodel. It is noted that a
significant accord was reached -- the BPDM and BSBR groups appears to be in agreement that business rules play an important role in business process definitions, and that business rule definition and management should be external from the definitions of the business process they govern.

Line56.com: Managing Business Rules Corticon 3.0 release

Line56.com: Managing Business Rules: "Managing Business Rules
Corticon 3.0 release incorporates automated rule-checking system; modeling is the key to execution; differentiating from other rules systems

by Demir Barlas, Line56

Monday, October 04, 2004

Niche e-business software company Corticon, which provides technology for modeling and presenting profligate business rules to line-of-business employees, today announced a 3.0 release, embedded with technology to highlight gaps in a company's rule system.
Mark Allen, CEO of Corticon, says the product 'isn't an app unto itself, but a way to externalize the rules from other apps and manage them as services.' Corticon uses Web services to fetch and deliver rules from external registries and internal applications, but typically more rules would be input manually than otherwise. For example, imagine managers inputting rules allowing a 'gold' customer to have more time to pay a bill than a 'silver' one. The possibilities are limited only by how much personalization a company wants to feed into the system. "
