VIASPACE Announces Licensing of World's Fastest Inferencing Engine ...

PRESS RELEASE Thursday's July 28th, 2005 Stock Trading Alert: "Investors, have a look at VIASPACE, Inc. (OTC BB: VSPC), a spin-off of the NASA/Caltech Jet Propulsion Laboratory that transforms proven space and defense technologies into hardware and software products that solve today's complex problems. The company announced Thursday that its subsidiary, Arroyo Sciences, has licensed Spacecraft Health Inference Engine (SHINE) technology from Caltech.
VIASPACE said that SHINE, Spacecraft Health Inference Engine, is an ultra-fast rules engine originally designed for on-board monitoring, analysis and diagnosis of NASA's spacecraft and ground data systems, and intended for mission critical systems where inferencing speed, portability and reuse is of critical importance. The company said that SHINE embodies revolutionary concepts in knowledge representation and manipulation that go well beyond traditional expert systems. SHINE can process over 30 million rules per second on desktop class computer processors, as standardized benchmarking studies have shown, and delivers over 100X increase in inference speed and up to 1000X reduction in the size of the execution environment footprint over the best comparable commercial product.
Being the only known expert system that delivers applications to a target system without requiring any additional run-time environment or dynamic memory allocation, SHINE enables an entire class of embedded knowledge based applications on hand-held devices and microsystems. The company said that over the past 10 years SHINE has been successfully applied to over two dozen applications both throughout NASA and within the commercial sector including flight hardware, which has significantly impacted operations cost, reliability and safety in NASA deep space missions, including Voyager, Galileo, Magellan, and EUVE. athenahealth:Keeping Your Company in the Pink and The Bush (not G.W.) Health-Care Solution

Keeping Your Company in the Pink: "Keeping Your Company in the Pink
In the tortured business of health care, athenahealth founders Jonathan Bush and Todd Park have created a culture that is anything but. Here's how they do it. "
.....
Leverage your best innovators -- employees and customers.
At athena, every employee is empowered to suggest adding a new rule to the rules engine. And every customer is encouraged not only to submit new rules but also to give feedback on any part of the process, either through customer-service specialists, user conferences, or via the Web site itself.
.....

The Bush Health-Care Solution No, not Dubya's. The president's first cousin Jonathan is an entrepreneur whose company, athenahealth, is trying to free doctors from the nightmare of insurance paperwork so they can get back to practicing medicine.

....
What athena calls its "secret sauce" is its rules engine, a horrifyingly complex piece of software that tries to incorporate every single coding change, billing-address modification, or regulatory shift in the industry. There are currently more than 40 million permutations, each of which spawns constant changes and exceptions -- if, for example, Aetna were to require a "Q" before any back-surgery-related claim number. In effect, athena has created a dynamic knowledge-management system in which employees and customers are encouraged to share what they learn.

Computerworld | JRules 5.0 touches all the bases

Computerworld JRules 5.0 touches all the bases: "JRules 5.0 touches all the bases
James Owen
20/07/2005 09:56:59
Abstracting business logic from underlying code into a separate language that business users can understand, a BRMS (Business Rule Management System) puts the control of business applications into the hands of the business owners. An enterprise BRMS, such as ILOG's JRules or Fair Isaac's Blaze Advisor, removes the 'impedance mismatch' between the IT department and business analysts, shortcutting the traditionally lengthy software change process and allowing applications to be updated quickly and easily as business requirements dictate.
